Pahokee sits on the southeastern shore of Lake Okeechobee, a city of about 5,500 people incorporated in 1922. The name comes from the Creek word for grassy waters, and the town grew on the dark muck soil that made it the Winter Vegetable Capital of the World in the 1930s. Along with Belle Glade, it shares the nickname Muck City. US-441 runs through downtown along the lake, and State Road 715 heads south toward Belle Glade.
Football is the thing most people outside the Glades know about Pahokee. The Pahokee High School Blue Devils have won six state championships, and the city has sent a long list of players to the NFL, including Anquan Boldin, Fred Taylor and Hall of Famer Rickey Jackson. Every year the Blue Devils play Glades Central in the Muck Bowl, one of the best known high school rivalries in the country.
