Clewiston sits on the south shore of Lake Okeechobee in Hendry County, where US-27 meets SR-80. It was settled in 1920, incorporated in 1925, and had 7,327 residents in the 2020 census. The town motto, America's Sweetest Town, comes from sugarcane. U.S. Sugar, founded in 1931, keeps its headquarters here, farms more than 230,000 acres across Hendry, Glades, Martin and Palm Beach counties, and runs its own railroad to haul cane. Every March the Clewiston Sugar Festival fills Royal Palm Avenue with vendors, a car show, antique tractors, a Miss Sugar pageant and 5K, 10K and half marathon races.
