Everything you need to print perfect DTF transfers
DTF Prep Studio is a free online tool from Arnold Prints for prepping direct-to-film (DTF) artwork. Remove backgrounds with a one-click color eyedropper, knock out the shirt, build a white underbase, add a halftone tone plate, clean up fuzzy transparent edges, and even rebuild low-res art with our built-in 4× AI upscaler — then preview the result right on your garment color before you export. Download a clean print-ready file for $5 (or +$5 for AI upscale), and send it straight to a DTF gang sheet or turn it into custom die-cut stickers.
How to prep your DTF file
- Upload your art. Drop in a PNG, JPG, or WebP — transparent PNGs give the cleanest results.
- Remove background & knock out the shirt. Flood-fill the background or click stray colors with the eyedropper, knock out the garment, and preview it live on a black (or any) shirt color.
- Sharpen & upscale. Use Fix Transparent Pixels for crisp edges, and turn on 4× AI Upscale to rebuild real detail in small or low-res artwork before it's prepped.
- Add a tone plate. Dial in LPI, angle, and dot gain for a soft DTF hand, plus an automatic white underbase.
- Approve & checkout. Tick the approval, then add your clean print-ready file to cart — or download a free watermarked proof first.

How does DTF Prep Studio pricing work?
DTF Prep Studio is free to use — upload, adjust every setting, and preview on your garment color as much as you want. When you're ready to download a finished file you can: grab a free watermarked proof, pay $5 for a single clean, watermark-free file, or add 4× AI Upscale for +$5 ($10 total). Pro ($199 one-time) unlocks unlimited clean downloads. Customers who print DTF gang sheets with Arnold Prints get complimentary Pro access — just email us.
What does the 4× AI Upscale do?
Small or low-resolution artwork? Our proprietary 4× AI upscaler runs right in your browser and rebuilds real detail before your file is prepped, so it presses sharp at full size instead of looking soft or pixelated. Turn it on, hit Generate AI Upscale to preview the result with a live progress bar, and it adds $5 to your clean file ($10 total). The AI model downloads once on first use.
Can I preview my design on a shirt color?
Yes. DTF Prep Studio previews your knocked-out art on a garment color — black by default — so you can see exactly how the white underbase and colors will read on dark or light shirts before you buy. Switch the shirt color to match your blanks.
How do I remove the background from my art?
Turn on Background Delete to flood-fill the background from the edges, or use the color eyedropper to click and remove stray off-white or background colors anywhere in the design — handy for AI-generated art. Then the shirt knockout and white underbase build cleanly on top.
What file types can I upload?
PNG, JPG, and WebP. Transparent PNGs produce the cleanest knockouts and halftone plates, but the studio can knock out solid backgrounds from flattened files too.
What is a white underbase and do I need one?
DTF prints use a layer of white ink beneath your colors so the design stays vibrant on dark garments. DTF Prep Studio builds that white underbase mask for you automatically.
What does "Fix Transparent Pixels" do?
It hardens fuzzy anti-aliased edges and removes faint ghost/halo pixels, then restores the true edge color — so your transfer presses and cuts clean without a hazy outline.
What DPI should I export at?
300 dpi works for most transfers. Use the 720 or 1440 presets when your RIP or printer expects higher-resolution input. The studio shows the exact output pixel size as you adjust the print width.
Can I print these as a DTF gang sheet?
Absolutely. Once your art is prepped, order a Custom DTF Gang Sheet and we'll print it ready to press, or browse the full DTF Transfers & Supplies collection.
