Lantana got its name from the wild lantana plants that grew here when M.B. Lyman opened the post office in 1888, and the town incorporated in 1921 with 22 people voting in its first election. Today about 11,500 residents live between the Intracoastal and I-95, with Lantana Road, Dixie Highway and Federal Highway carrying most of the traffic. Longtime locals remember the National Enquirer headquarters here and the giant Christmas tree it put up on its grounds every year from 1974 to 1988.
The town stays close to the water. Sportsman's Park on East Ocean Avenue has two boat ramps, fish cleaning stations, a seawall and a pier, and the municipal beach park across the bridge fills up with families on weekends. Charter captains, marinas and bait shops along the waterfront go through embroidered hats, logo shirts and cut vinyl lettering, and they want a logo that holds up to salt and sun.
West of I-95, Lantana Road runs out to the Palm Beach County Park Airport, better known as the Lantana airport, a general aviation field with flight schools, aircraft maintenance and a propeller shop. Kids play ball at the Lantana Sports Park, which has three baseball fields and two soccer fields, and go to Lantana Elementary, Lantana Community Middle and Santaluces Community High. The Town of Lantana runs a full calendar under its Enjoy Lantana program: drive-in movie nights at the Sports Park in January and February, an egg hunt at Maddock Park in March, the July 4th Celebration with fireworks at Bicentennial Park, the Haunted Nature Preserve in October and Winterfest at Town Hall in December.
