Hypoluxo calls itself The Home of the Barefoot Mailman, and it earned the title. Andrew Garnett and James Hamilton, two of the settlers who arrived in 1884, carried the mail between the Lake Worth area and Miami as barefoot mailmen. The name itself is older than the town: it shows up on an 1841 War Department map as the Seminole name for the lake, often translated as water all around, no get out.
