Ocean Ridge started life in 1931 as a new town called Boynton Beach, carved out of the old Town of Boynton over a tax dispute. In 1937 the mayor ran a naming contest, his daughter Marion White Bird won the $100 prize with Ocean Ridge, and fourteen residents voted the change in by 1939.
Today it is a quiet barrier island town of about 1,830 people, strung along A1A between the Atlantic and the Intracoastal, with Old Ocean Boulevard running where A1A used to be before the 1947 hurricane. The Boynton Inlet, opened in 1926, marks the north end, and Ocean Inlet Park and Ocean Ridge Hammock Park draw fishermen and beachgoers from all over the county.
