It became a village in 2002, pulling together what had been the Cutler, Rockdale and East Perrine areas, and the 2020 census counted about 24,400 residents across 8.44 square miles. Like its neighbors, the area took a direct hit from Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and spent years rebuilding.
