Miami Springs was founded in the 1920s by aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss and James Bright, first as Country Club Estates, and incorporated in 1926. Curtiss gave it a Pueblo Revival look you still see on the older homes and on the restored Curtiss Mansion, and the city was named for a spring that supplied parts of Miami with fresh water into the 1990s. Today about 13,900 people live here, on the north edge of Miami International Airport, with Hialeah to the northeast and Virginia Gardens to the southwest.
The airport has always shaped the local economy. Eastern Airlines and Pan Am employed plenty of residents before both collapsed in 1991, and airport-related businesses, hotels and logistics companies still sit close by. At the center of town, Curtiss Parkway runs between the Miami Springs Golf Course and downtown, and it is where the River Cities Festival takes over every April, a tradition that started as the River Cities Regatta in 1973.
