Key Biscayne is an island village of about 14,800 people at the end of the Rickenbacker Causeway. It covers just 1.71 square miles, with Crandon Park on the north end and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park and its lighthouse on the south. The causeway opened in 1947 and set off the island's development, and in 1991 Key Biscayne incorporated as a village, the first new city in Miami-Dade in more than 50 years. Richard Nixon kept a vacation compound here during his presidency.

The Fourth of July parade is the island's signature event, with a flyover, floats, golf carts and decorated boats towed down Crandon Boulevard. Groups competing for float awards often order matching shirts for everyone riding along, a vinyl banner for the side of the float, and stickers to hand out.
