Lake Park started life in 1923 as Kelsey City, named for developer Harry Kelsey, who bought 30,000 acres north of West Palm Beach. It was the first zoned municipality in Florida, laid out with help from the Olmsted Brothers landscape firm, and it took the name Lake Park in 1939. The 1920s Mediterranean Revival town hall at 535 Park Avenue is still in use and sits on the National Register of Historic Places. Today about 9,000 people live in the town's 2.4 square miles, which run from the Intracoastal, looking across at Singer Island, west into commercial and industrial blocks.
