Parkland was set up to stay green. Bruce Blount, a farmer and rancher, led its incorporation in 1963 and served as the first mayor, and there were no stores or traffic lights in town until the mid-1990s. The zoning still leans toward open space and horses, and the city sits right on the Palm Beach County line, with Coral Springs to the south, Coconut Creek to the east and the Everglades out west. About 34,700 people live here now.
Most of them live in planned neighborhoods. Heron Bay and Parkland Isles came first in the 1990s and 2000s, followed by Parkland Bay, Watercrest, Cascada, Parkland Golf and Country Club and Four Seasons Parkland. That means HOAs, clubhouses and a lot of families, and a lot of families means youth sports. Parkland Youth Center, the Parkland Rangers tackle football and cheer program and the South Parkland Youth Association all field teams, and every season brings new uniforms, spirit wear and sponsor banners.
The horse side of town is real, too. The Equestrian Center at Temple Park on Ranch Road hosts Parkland Horseman's Association shows, and riders and barns order embroidered jackets, polos and caps. Pine Trails Park is where a lot of Parkland's calendar happens. Parkland Day opens with a parade on city streets, then moves to the park for live music and a business expo. The Parkland Dash brings hundreds of runners and walkers for a one mile walk, a 5K and a 5 mile run. The city also runs a Family Fun Fest carnival, a Halloween festival, Snowfest and movies in the park. Races need shirts, the expo needs banners and table displays, and every event needs signs.
From November through April, the Parkland Farmers' Market sets up on the first and third Sunday of the month at the Equestrian Center at Temple Park, 8350 Ranch Road. Vendors there order labels, stickers and booth banners. Over at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, the Eagle Regiment has earned state championship honors in marching band, and groups like it, along with sports boosters and clubs, are the kind of school programs that order shirts in bulk. City Hall sits at University Drive and Holmberg Road, the main crossroads for much of the city.
