Margate got its name from founder Jack Marqusee plus the word gateway, because it was meant to be the gateway to western Broward. It became a town in 1955 and a city in 1961, and today about 58,700 people live in its nine square miles. Most of the city's commerce lines up along State Road 7 and Margate Boulevard, with more along Atlantic Boulevard and Coconut Creek Parkway: plazas full of restaurants, salons, auto shops, insurance offices and family run businesses.
The next big change is the Margate City Center. The Margate Community Redevelopment Agency has pulled together roughly 50 acres around State Road 7 and Margate Boulevard, including the former Swap Shop property, and approved a final concept design for a mixed use district with dining, retail, homes and a town square.
