Artwork tips for etching on black
Logos
Solid, single-color logos etch best. If your logo is full color, the studio converts it to a silhouette automatically; switch to Outline if you only want the edges, or Photo if it has shading you want to keep.
Photos
Photo mode keeps the gray tones and hands the laser a shaded image, so a portrait or a pet photo reads as a real picture on the metal. Higher contrast photos come out best.
Invert
Sometimes the etch looks better reversed: a bright steel field with your logo left in black. Tap Invert in the studio to compare both before you approve. Badges and text-heavy designs often win inverted.
Frequently asked questions
Is laser etching permanent?
Yes. The laser removes the powder coating and exposes the stainless steel underneath. There is no ink or transfer to wear off, so the design lasts as long as the tumbler does.
Are the tumblers dishwasher safe?
The etch is, but we recommend hand washing powder-coated drinkware. Dishwasher heat and detergent can dull the black coating over time, and that is true of any powder-coated tumbler, etched or not.
What file types can I upload?
PNG, JPG, and SVG. A PNG with a transparent background gives the cleanest result. If you only have a JPG on a white or colored background, the studio strips the background for you.
Can you etch a photo?
Yes. Choose Photo mode in the studio. It keeps the shading and sends the laser a grayscale image, which is dithered on the machine the way photo engraving is meant to run. Sharp, high-contrast photos give the best result on black.
What does Invert do?
It reverses the etch. Instead of your logo being etched into the black, the area around it is etched to bright steel and the logo stays black. It is a matter of taste, so try both in the proof.
How big can the design be?
Up to 3" x 3" on both tumbler sizes and 2.5" x 2" on the flask. The studio shows the true size while you design and will not let a design run off the flat panel.
Can I etch both sides?
Yes. Add a note in the studio or contact us and we will set up a second side. Many customers put a logo on one side and a name on the other.
Is there a minimum order?
No. Order one for yourself or one for a gift. Quantity pricing kicks in automatically as you raise the count, so 12 or 24 for a team comes out lower per piece.
How long does it take?
Single pieces and small runs are usually ready within a few business days. Larger team orders take a little longer, and we confirm the date when your order lands. Local pickup in Westlake is available.
Do you offer other colors or other items?
Right now we etch black 20oz and 30oz tumblers and matte black flasks, which is what looks best etched and what most customers ask for. Slate coasters, brass coins, and keychains are in the full laser engraving studio. Ask us about other colors for larger orders.
Local laser etching in Palm Beach County
Arnold Prints is in Westlake, Florida, and serves Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, Loxahatchee Groves, West Palm Beach, Jupiter, and the rest of Palm Beach County. Local orders can be picked up at the shop. We run our etching in house on a fiber laser, so there is no middleman and no minimum.
