Miami Gardens is only a little over twenty years old as a city, incorporated in 2003 out of neighborhoods with much longer histories: Carol City, Norland, Scott Lake, Bunche Park, Andover and Lake Lucerne among them. With about 112,000 residents, it is the largest predominantly Black city in Florida, and it has a sense of pride that shows up in its schools, churches and festivals. The Florida Turnpike, the Palmetto and NW 27th Avenue carry most of the traffic through town.
It is also home to Hard Rock Stadium, which puts Miami Gardens on TV most weekends. The Miami Dolphins and the University of Miami Hurricanes play there, the Orange Bowl is played there every year, the Miami Open tennis tournament is held on the grounds, and since 2022 Formula One has run the Miami Grand Prix around the stadium.
