Full Color Leather Patches: UV Printing vs Laser Engraving

Full color leather patches are made by UV printing directly onto leather or leatherette with a flexible white ink underneath the color, so the design stays bright and bends with the patch instead of cracking. Laser engraving, the classic way to make a leather patch, gives you one tone burned into the material. If your logo depends on color, UV printing is the way to go. If your logo works in one tone and you want that rugged, branded look, laser engraving is still the gold standard. Arnold Prints runs both in house in Westlake, Florida.

We make a lot of laser engraved patches, and we will happily keep recommending them when they fit. This article is about the other pile of artwork: the multi color logos that never looked right as an engraving.

The problem with color logos on leather

Laser engraving works by changing the material. On leatherette it etches through the top layer to reveal a contrasting color. On genuine leather it darkens the surface. Either way you get one tone against the base color. A clean wordmark or a single color shield looks fantastic that way.

A logo with red and blue, a gradient, a photo or a mascot with lots of fills does not. Engraving collapses all of those colors into one, and the customer has to decide whether the flattened version still reads as their brand. Often it does not.

How UV printing on leather works

Our xTool O1 Omni Dual-Head UV printer has a flexible white ink made for soft, bendable materials like leather and leatherette. Standard rigid white is great on acrylic or metal, but it can crack when a material flexes. The flexible white goes down first in the shape of the artwork, then CMYK color prints on top at up to 720 x 1440 dpi. Each layer cures instantly under UV light.

The result is full color with real detail: gradients, small text, photographic elements and exact brand colors, on a patch that still feels like leather.

Adding texture

Clear coat can be printed as gloss, matte or spot gloss, and built up into raised texture. On a patch that opens up some nice details: a raised border that mimics stitching, a glossy logo on a matte patch, or a textured background that picks up the light.

When to choose laser engraving

Choose laser when your logo already works in one color, when you want the classic tan and brown branded look, or when the patch will see heavy wear on a work cap. The engraved mark is part of the material, so there is nothing to scuff off. Our custom laser engraved patches and custom leather patch hats pages cover shapes, materials and cap options for the laser side.

When to choose UV printing

  • Brand colors are non negotiable. Corporate logos with a specific color palette.
  • Mascots and team crests. Youth sports, school clubs and booster gear with multi color art.
  • Photos or illustrations. Artwork with shading or gradients that would vanish in an engraving.
  • Dark patch material. The white underbase keeps color bright on black or dark brown leatherette.
  • Bright accent colors. Fluorescent red and yellow inks are available for safety style or neon looks.

Where full color patches get used

  • Hats. Trucker caps and structured snapbacks with a color patch on the front panel.
  • Bags and totes. Leather or canvas bags with a branded tag.
  • Jackets and vests. Chest or sleeve patches for teams, clubs and businesses.
  • Products and packaging. Leather tags on blankets, koozies, notebooks and gift sets.
  • Keychains. Leatherette fobs printed in full color, a nice match for custom keychains in a bundle.

Patch design tips

  1. Mind the size. Most cap patches land between 2 and 3.5 inches wide. Keep text bold enough to read at that size.
  2. Pick the base material color on purpose. Tan, brown, black and gray leatherette all print well. Design areas without ink will show the material, which can be part of the look.
  3. Consider a mix. A full color logo with the patch edge left natural, or a printed logo on a patch that also has a laser engraved border, combines the best of both.
  4. Send vector art. AI, EPS, PDF or SVG files keep edges sharp. High resolution PNG with a transparent background also works.

Combining both processes

Because we run lasers and UV printing in the same shop, we can do things a single process shop cannot. A patch can be laser cut to a custom contour, engraved with a border or tagline, and UV printed with the full color logo in the center. For customers who are torn between the two looks, we can make a sample of each.

Caring for leather patches

Whether a patch is printed or engraved, the item it sits on usually sets the care rules. Caps and bags with leather or leatherette patches should be spot cleaned with a damp cloth rather than machine washed. Heat and tumbling are hard on leather, adhesive and stitching alike. Store caps out of hot cars when you can, since Florida summer heat inside a closed vehicle is tough on any material. A printed patch with a clear coat layer on top shrugs off light scuffs, and the flexible white underneath keeps the print moving with the leather.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you print full color on leather?

Yes. We UV print full color on leather and leatherette using a flexible white underbase that bends with the material, then CMYK color on top.

Will the print crack when the patch bends?

The flexible white ink is designed for soft materials so the print moves with the patch. Patches on caps and bags handle normal flexing well.

Should I choose a laser engraved or UV printed patch?

If your logo works in one tone and you love the classic branded look, choose laser. If your logo needs color, choose UV printing. We can make samples of both.

Is there a minimum order for UV printed patches?

No minimum. UV printing needs no screens or plates, and the per piece price drops as quantity goes up.

Can I order patches only and apply them myself?

Ask us about patch only orders. Tell us how you plan to attach them and we will recommend the right backing.

Get your patch quoted

Send us your logo, the item it is going on and the quantity. We will tell you honestly whether it wants a laser, a UV print or both, and send a proof and quote. Request a quote, call 561-323-7573 or email sales@arnoldprints.com. See all of our UV services on the UV printing page.
